Meet Carter! He is 21 months old and was recently diagnosed with Phelan-McDermid Syndrome. There are only 500 known cases, world-wide. This relatively unknown syndrome, also known as 22q13 Deletion, is a chromosomal condition caused by the absence or loss of genes at the tip of the 22nd chromosome. These specific genes play a pivotal role in the development of the nervous system, including the brain. Children diagnosed with Phelan-McDermid Syndrome exhibit a wide range and severity of symptoms, but most experience moderate to severe physical and intellectual developmental delays. The most common traits shared among children diagnosed, are delays in speech/communication and very low muscle tone.
Carter is a very happy, loving and curious little man. He works intently every week, participating in physical, occupational and speech therapy. Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, led by Dr. Joseph Buxbaum, has recently selected Carter to take part in a clinical trial. Early results from Dr. Buxbaum’s work show very promising results for children just like Carter. It is hopeful that this trial will bolster Carter’s ability to communicate with his parents, family, friends and future friends.
Carter will be traveling with his parents to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York next summer to take part in the three-month clinical trial. The goal of this Hope Benefit is to aid Carter and his family in covering/re-covering the medical, travel and miscellaneous expenses that are not covered by insurance. Please join in supporting the Hope benefit for Carter Cox by offering love, encouragement and support for this very special little boy and his family. Any donations for the silent auction and drawing would be greatly appreciated! For questions on donations, please contact Toni Morris at (251-602-1452) or Lindsay Dunn at (251-404-1542)
